Microchip Tips (for people with Microchipped pets)
There is a sense of security that comes with knowing your pet has a microchip but the problem is that most people really don't really mind the details. The microchip can save your pet's life or it can be completely useless depending on several factors. Please take a moment and consider the following if your pet has been microchipped:
HAVE YOU MOVED OR CHANGED YOUR PHONE NUMBER SINCE YOUR PET WAS CHIPPED?

If you have, did you remember to change your address/phone number on your chip registration? If you didn't, this would be a good time to do so. If you don't know where your pet is registered (and at this point there are probably a dozen chip registries in the U.S.), there are a couple of ways you can figure it out. Go to PetMicrochipLookup.org and enter your pet's chip number and the registry should come up, sometimes with a link you can click. From here you can contact the registry and make sure they have the right information. Some chips can be identified simply by entering the number into Google.
IS YOUR PET'S TAG LEGIBLE?
Most microchips come with a plastic tag showing your pet's unique chip number and the registry phone number. Because these are plastic, they wear down over the years until no one can read the chip number. If your pet is found by someone who doesn't have a chip scanner and the tag is legible, the registry can be contacted. If the chip number cannot be read on the tag (or if your pet isn't wearing the tag), the pet will have to be scanned in order for the chip to be found.
The presence of a plastic tag can alert the finder that there is chip present but then they have to bring your pet to a shelter or animal hospital for scanning. If you cannot read your pet's chip number on the original tag, consider ordering a metal tag with the chip registry phone number and tag number. There are many pet tag engraving services that you can order from.

IS YOUR CHIP REGISTERED AT ALL?
If you didn't fill out registration paperwork yourself, it may not have been done. Most shelters take care of this for you at the time of adoption but not all of them. Some just give you a pamphlet to fill out on your own and often it gets buried in all the other papers they give you with adoption. Rescue groups commonly place microchips but do not register them, leaving that expense for the new owner. Use PetMicrochpLookup.org (or even Google) to find your chip registry and then call the registry to see what information they have. Many people have no idea their pet's chip number is basically a dead end because it was never registered.

IS YOUR CHIP REGISTRY A GOOD ONE?
You want to use a chip registry that is open 24 hours daily so that your pet can be identified no matter when or where he is found. Some of the free registries do not have this kind of service. Better registries have additional systems where they will send out flyers to local shelters and animal hospitals for you if your pet is lost. Some will pay for transport should your pet be found far from home. The AVID microchip number begins with the word "AVID" when it is scanned so if you have an AVID chip, it is especially important that your pet is registered in the AVID database because anyone scanning a chip that says "AVID" is probably not going to look in any other database for your registration.
DID YOU KNOW THAT YOUR DOG LICENSE AND CHIP REGISTRATION ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT?
Your chip registration is what links your pet's unique chip number to your name, address and phone number. No personal information of yours is recorded on the chip. Only the registry knows who you are and who your pet is. Your dog license is what allows you to legally own your dog in the city where you live. All cities will require rabies vaccination for licensing (or some kind of special exemption paperwork). Some also require proof of spay or neuter. Some also require microchipping. Most licensing forms have a space for the chip number even if it is not a legal requirement. This helps identify your pet should he or she find himself in a city shelter. Do not assume that because your dog is licensed, that the chip is registered (or vice versa). These are two completely different databases.
The microchip is not a location device; it is a permanent identification number. Our hospital has witnessed many spectacular pet recoveries made possible by the presence of a microchip ID. We have also seen many pets with unregistered chips who may never have been able to make it home. If you need any help with chipping information, please call our office at 310-391-6741 and we will be happy to check your registration, confirm your chip number, or help you with any other chip details.
