NEW MEDICAL DEVELOPMENTS FOR DOGS: WHAT'S COMING AND WHAT'S ALREADY HERE
COMING SOON:
GALLIPRANT FOR CANINE ARTHRITIS PAIN This year introduces the "piprant" class of pain medications, designed for long term use without the concerns of liver and kidney function that have been issues for the non-steroidal anti-inflammatories. The wider safety margin makes the products attractive for feline use, though that remains unapproved at this time. We are looking forward to the introduction of this medication in the next couple of months. This medication is so new that the manufacturer's web page is not yet live but it might be by the time you read this.

BIVALENT FLU VACCINE FOR DOGS H3N2 is the Asian flu for dogs, way more virulent and contagious than H3N8, the more common dog flu. Many canine rescue groups bring dogs to the U.S. from Asian countries for adoption. In 2015, this practice led to a spectacular canine flu outbreak in the Chicago area that sickened over 1000 dogs and quarantined the city to canine travel. A vaccine was quickly marketed but which should you use? In February we will be offering vaccine that includes both flu strains. This vaccine is recommended for dogs with regular contact with other dogs (dog park, groomer, doggie day care etc.)
For more information on canine flu, visit our library page.
CYTOPOINT FOR ALLERGIC DERMATITIS IN THE DOG Zoetis has released a monoclonal antibody product to alter the immunological mechanisms of itch in the skin of allergic dogs. No steroids/cortisones involved. This is a monthly injection dogs can take during their itch season without the side effects associated with current effective anti-itch therapies.
Visit Cytopoint4dogs.com for more information.
NO NEED TO WAIT. THESE DEVELOPMENTS ARE HERE RIGHT NOW:
SILEO ORAL GEL FOR CANINE ANXIETY This product was developed for noise phobia as on the Fourth of July but can be used for other causes of fear: travel, grooming, vet visit, etc. The gel is delivered into the cheek pouch (not swallowed) and provides relief of fear for hours without drowsiness.
Visit our Sileo page for details.
DELMOPINOL DENTAL TREATS These new dental chews contain a center piece of demopinol so that they not only rub plaque of the teeth; they prevent its re-attachment. This is excellent for preventing dental disease but they also are effective in reducing bad breath. For proper effectiveness, one chew treat is given daily. To facilitate this, they are packaged in 14 and 30 day supply boxes.
For more details visit: OraVet.com.
SHOCKWAVE THERAPY FOR ARTHRITIS Shockwave therapy, performed under sedation, involves the transmission of pressure waves through soft tissue with the result being long term relief from orthopedic pain without the use of drugs. Our own Dr. Johnson performs shockwave therapy here on a regular basis. Her consultation schedule is listed below.
